Mayo Clinic: Lyme Disease Symptoms, Causes, Diagnosis, and Treatment

The mission of the Mayo Clinic is to inspire hope and contribute to health and well-being by providing the best care to every patient through integrated clinical practice, education and research.

Lyme disease is caused by four main species of bacteria. Borrelia burgdorferi and Borrelia mayonii cause Lyme disease in the United States, while Borrelia afzelii and Borrelia garinii are the leading causes in Europe and Asia. The most common tick-borne illness in these regions, Lyme disease is transmitted by the bite of an infected black-legged tick, commonly known as a deer tick.

You're more likely to get Lyme disease if you live or spend time in grassy and heavily wooded areas where ticks carrying Lyme disease thrive. It's important to take common-sense precautions in tick-infested areas.

Minnesota Lyme Association

The mission of the Minnesota Lyme Association is to provide a supportive environment for people affected by Lyme and other other tick-borne diseases, and to educate the public and health professionals in the prevention diagnosis and effective treatment of these diseases. The purpose of the Minnesota Lyme Association is to support those people who have been diagnosed with Lyme disease and their families and significant others, to promote the education of health care professionals pertaining to the diagnosis and treatment of Lyme disease and other tick borne illnesses, and t o raise funds for education and prevention involving Lyme disease and tick borne illnesses.

Minnesota Department of Health: About Lyme Disease

The Minnesota Department of Health’s mission is about protecting, maintaining and improving the health of all Minnesotans.

Lyme disease is a potentially serious bacterial infection caused by the bite of an infected blacklegged tick (also known as the deer tick or bear tick). The disease affects both humans and animals. The Minnesota Department of Health is monitoring the spread of the disease across the state and working with residents to limit exposure to the ticks causing the disease.

University of Minnesota: Ixodes Outreach Project

Ixodes outreach project: A northern MN community education and research program  by Dr. Benjamin Clarke, University of Minnesota Duluth

Lyme Disease (LD) is an emerging epidemic in the Upper Midwest. Early identification of LD symptoms is paramount to effective medical treatment; knowledge of symptoms, how LD spreads, and getting immediate medical treatment is the best prevention. The goal of this project is to promote awareness of health concerns associated with LD and tick-borne diseases in northeast Minnesota’s isolated Arrowhead region. This will be accomplished through educational activities, a citizen-science program, and an undergraduate research experience.
